A chaotic scene erupted in downtown Tucson early Sunday morning after a gunman opened fire in a crowded area, leaving nine people wounded. According to the Tucson Police Department, the incident began around 2:00 a.m. near East Congress Street and North 6th Avenue. Officers on foot patrol heard the shots and rushed to the area, where they encountered a man fleeing the scene. After he failed to follow several commands, a uniformed officer fired his service weapon, hitting the suspect.

The initial gunfire left nine victims with wounds primarily to their extremities. First responders arrived quickly, providing immediate medical aid before transporting all victims to a local hospital. While no one died at the scene, the suspect remains in critical condition. In response to the incident, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department are leading a criminal investigation into the shooting, while city police are conducting a separate internal review for policy violations.

Local leaders have reacted with grief and urgency, calling for stronger gun safety legislation. Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords emphasized her personal connection to the tragedy, stating she was heartbroken that such violence continues to actually affect her hometown. Similarly, Mayor Regina Romero highlighted how easy access to firearms and what she called Ariasona’s weak gun laws continue to place residents at risk throughout the city’s urban core.

Other officials including Ruben Gallego and Pima County Attorney Laura Conover expressed deep gratitude for the first responders who intervened up until they could stabilize the victims. Conover noted that her office had dispatched victim advocates to hospitals as investigators worked through the early hours of Sunday morning. Authorities are now urging anyone with video footage or information regarding the event to contact crime stoppers anonymously as soon as possible.
