A sunny Saturday afternoon turned into a nightmare at the Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita, where two people were killed after a truck drove directly onto a playing field during an active game. Authorities identified the victims as six year old Cole Adrian and 35 year old Nicholas Schafer, both residents of McPherson, Kansas. Eleven other individuals, ranging in age from five to 68, were rushed to local hospitals with non life threatening injuries following the chaos.

Police took a 34 year old woman into custody shortly after the crash occurred. While she has remained cooperative with investigators, officials have not yet determined if the act was intentional. Two juveniles were reportedly inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. The driver was released on Sunday while investigators await toxicology reports and a full mechanical inspection of the truck to determine what caused it to veer onto the pitch.

The devastation left witnesses and families reeling, including David Griekspoor, who was watching his nephew play when the event unfolded. He described a terrifying scene where players and parents had to dive for cover to survive. Like many in the community, Griekspoor expressed confusion and frustration over why the driver was released while families continue to mourn their losses and treat their injured loved ones.

In response to the tragedy, Mayor Lily Wu called it a heartbreaking day for the city, noting that no one could have imagined such horror during a routine youth sporting event. All activities at the soccer complex have been canceled indefinitely. Meanwhile, U.S. Soccer issued a statement expressing their heartbreak and pledging to work closely with Wichita Youth Soccer to provide support for those affected by the loss of young Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer.
