Investigators have revealed a harrowing sequence of events following a weekend tragedy at Miami International Airport, where an Amazon branded cargo plane veered off the runway and claimed five lives. According to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy, the Boeing 767 crashed through airport boundaries, striking two separate vehicles. The first was a white Ford van belonging to Professional Ocean Service Corporation, a contract cleaning firm for airlines, which was carrying seven employees at the time. The aircraft then tore through a perimeter fence and slammed into a Toyota SUV traveling along Northwest 67th Avenue outside the airport grounds.

Homendy described the wreckage as devastating, noting that the cleaning crew’s van was essentially torn apart upon impact. Debris from both vehicles and the aircraft were scattered across the landscape, leaving behind long tire marks trailing through the grass. While five people died and another five were injured, officials stated that their immediate priority remains the recovery of victims over the technical analysis of the crash site. Investigators must also contend with significant fuel spills that require remediation before they can fully secure the area.

The flight, operated by 21 Air and arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, had already completed two other legs of travel earlier that day between Cincinnati and Miami. After overrunning the runway during its final landing, it plowed through navigational equipment before hitting the road traffic. Two crew members were aboard; reports indicate they were initially trapped in the cockpit, though footage later showed one member leaping from the plane while another was transported via gurney.

Amazon and 21 Air leadership have issued statements expressing heartbreak and offering deep sympathies to the families affected by the loss. As part of their ongoing probe into what caused the aircraft to overshoot its mark, NTSB investigators have recovered both the flight data and cockpit voice recorders. They plan to spend at least a week on site analyzing air traffic control logs and overall aircraft performance to determine how such a catastrophic failure occurred.
